Summary: One year after a violent encounter with Edinburgh gangster Ger Cafferty, Detective Sergeant John Rebus and his new Constable, Siobhan Clarke, must investigate the public assault of one of Cafferty's enforcers. Already struggling with the estrangement of his ex-wife Rhona and daughter Sammy, Rebus's tense relationship with his poverty-stricken brother, Michael, worsens, and an increasingly humiliated Michael feels pressured to take desperate action to provide for his family.
